Urban myths: Local authorities in Wales are worse than in England

18th February 2016 - 1 minute read

local councilsThis one was busted in 2002! Cardiff University and the Local and Regional Government Research Unit produced a report in which they looked at Local Authorities in Wales and proved that performance levels, and rates of improvement, are very similar in English and Welsh councils. The report concludes with the comment that,

‘Local councils, and other parts of the public sector, need to be judged on their service achievements, not on their adoption of the latest management fads promulgated by central policy makers’.

Which other myths/’common sense’ assertions could we address?

-Politicians, they’re only in it for themselves!

-Local Government Officers, Civil Servants, Teachers, NHS Managers, in fact anyone working in the Public sector, ‘doesn’t live in the real world’.

-The Welsh Assembly’s a waste of money, an unnecessary additional layer of Government.

-The UK should get out of the EU.

I don’t mind what your argument is so long as it has proper evidence and not Faragist condescension and mockery devoid of objective information.
